At midnight on Monday, March 5th, Wayne Bauer (83 years old) of, Warsaw, Indiana, finished his race and went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ. Born on October 3rd, 1934, to Henry and Aina Bauer in Chicago, Illinois, Wayne attended Steinmetz High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force for six years (Airman Second Class) and met his wife Edith while stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany. Despite his initial claim that she was “too young and too short,” they ended up married for 58 years. They had three children, Scott, Susanne, and Torrey. Wayne attended the Grand Rapids School of Bible Music, where he graduated with his Teachers Diploma in Christian Education. Upon his graduation, he pastored country churches in Boulder, Colorado and Oak, Nebraska. In 1968, they served under New Tribes Missions for 16 years as missionaries to the Philippines. After returning to the States, Wayne became involved in local jail ministry and loved corresponding with inmates. He was an avid reader with a deep affection for books, and was abundantly generous in giving books to others. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Bears and a reluctant Cubs fan. He loved playing sports with his children and grandchildren, and was a worthy chess opponent. He took great delight in fishing, in spite of the often frustratingly effective counterintelligence of the fish. He was a man of prayer and loved to memorize Scripture, and he wanted everyone to know how grateful he was for the grace that had saved him, and the love of God that sustained him. Wayne is survived by his loving wife: Edith Greta Bauer (née Eichler); children: Scott Bauer, Susanne Poyner (Tim), and Torrey Bauer (Julie); grandchildren: Jordan, Jacob, and Karly Poyner, and Keely and Kade Bauer. He is preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Aina Bauer, and sister: Joyce Dougill. His body will be interred at Oakwood Cemetery in a private service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kosciusko County Jail Ministry, P.O. Box 602, Winona Lake, IN 46590. A memorial celebration will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, March 10th at Valley Springs Fellowship church, 345 North 175 East, Warsaw, IN 46582.
