Steven R. Haines, 79, passed away on Wednesday February 4, 2026 at Lutheran Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw.
Born and raised in North Webster, Steve was the son of Robert “Smoky” and F. Betty (Baugher) Haines. He was an outstanding catcher for North Webster High School baseball team and would graduate with the class of 1964. He then went on to attend Evansville College on a baseball scholarship.
While working in Syracuse, he would often stop for lunch at the local car hop B&K. While the food was good, it was a young lady that he needed to see. This love became one on July 3, 1970 when Steve married Patti A. Disher in North Webster. They would welcome two sons.
Steve was loving and an incredible family man. He was a very proud dad and grandfather. He enjoyed coaching his boy’s little league teams and in turn his sons coached their own kids as well. He was the neighborhood backyard quarterback and the couple stepped up as a mom and dad figure to many. They always had an open-door policy and they knew he was always a go-to guy they could count on.
He worked as a polisher for DePuy Orthopaedics in Warsaw for almost 30 years before his retirement. Steve was very active in the union for DePuy. He initiated a union policy training program at Indiana University- South Bend.
Through and through, Steve was a Democrat. He served as the Democratic Party Chair for Kosciusko County for 13 years and was inducted into the Kosciusko County Democratic Hall of Fame. He was a recipient of the Edward Roush Award and was the 3rd District Chairman that also included Fort Wayne. Steve was proud to have introduced Bill Clinton in 2008 when he came to Warsaw to speak and also met Hilary Clinton in Fort Wayne. He got a tie signed by both of them and it was a prized possession.
Steve served on the board for the City of Warsaw Parks and Recreation for 20 years, with 10 of those being as president. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed being on bowling leagues with his wife and friends. He was the founder of the popular Labor Day Picnic in Warsaw.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Pat, and their sons: Kevin Haines of Warsaw and Jason (Lori) Haines of Plymouth; daughter-in-law, Amber Haines; grandchildren: Nolan, Hannah (Andrew) Harstine, Sabrina, Andrew (Madyson), Lydia (Michael) Berg and Isaac and 2 great-grandchildren on the way that he was extremely excited for. Also surviving are his sisters, Cynthia (Chad) Beezley of Wilmot and Mary Sue (Andy) Hartley of North Webster.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
Per his wishes, no formal services will be held.
Memorial contributions can be made to the City of Warsaw Parks & Recreation, 123 E. Fort Wayne Street Warsaw, IN 46580 or the Kosciusko County Democratic Party PO Box 366, Leesburg Indiana, 46538.
