Richard Lee Carman

Dr. Richard Lee “Doc” Carman, 88, of Winona Lake, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023 at Grace Village Healthcare after a brief illness. It was not unexpected as he was in the late stages of a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Richard was born on December 29, 1934, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Albert and Goldie (Chapman) Carman. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Dilley Laughner on May 14, 1976, in Warsaw.

He was a graduate of Roanoke High School and continued on to receive an O.D. Degree from IU.

He served in the community as an Optometrist for 40 years as owner of Dr. Richard L Carman Optometrist, Inc. He would retire in 2002. Richard was a member of Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He was involved in Mizpah Shriners in Ft. Wayne, as well as a past president for Kosciusko County Shiners Club and Warsaw Lions Club. He also was a 60 year member of the American Optometric Association. Richard was a 32nd degree mason and a lifetime member American Legion post 49.

Richard will be lovingly remembered by his wife Phyllis, a son Chris (Brandy) Carman; grandchildren, Lilly, Molly, Sam, and Noble; a brother Bill (Sabra) Carman; nephews Phillip and David (Kristin) Carman and nieces Aimee (Jason) McCowan, Leanne (Brett) Jones, and Melissa (Steve) Rost. He was preceded in passing by his parents and sons Timothy and Steve Carman.

A visitation with family and friends will be from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, June 10, 2023 in McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapels, 2290 Provident Ct. Warsaw. Funeral services in celebration of Richard’s life will begin at 12 noon on Saturday, June 10, 2023 in the funeral chapel with Pastor Aaron Klein officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
