Matthew W. Hellums, 38, was fulfilling his lifelong dream of going to California and seeing the sights and landscapes, when he unexpectedly passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026. He was a loving father, son and friend to many.
Born in Columbia City, Indiana on September 17, 1987, Matt was the son of Kimberly Moody and Harold Hellums. He played basketball and football for Tippecanoe Valley High School and graduated with the class of 2005. Matt was taking online courses in engineering.
With his social personality, Matt always excelled in sales. He worked at Smart Cabinetry in Nappanee and most recently for Kapps Lawn Care.
Matt was spiritual and was proud of a lot of achievements in his life, but the center of it was always his son, Zhayne. They were gym rats together, trained for sports together and played video games together. Matt attended many sporting events for Zhayne and they both made many friends worldwide with their gaming.
He loved music and enjoyed rapping and freestyling. A night out with his friends was always a great time or just going out to dinner to socialize. Matt and his mom went to comedy clubs and were big fans of IU and the 49ers, going to numerous games.
Matt is deeply missed by his son, Zhayne, of Argos; his mother, Kimberly of Fort Wayne; his aunts, Cheryl (Dan) Faith of Washington, IN and Sharon Patterson of Jacksonville, FL; and cousins: Crystal (Eric) Sarvar, Aleysiah Sarvar and Ally Sarvar.
He was welcomed into heaven by his uncle Mike Patterson and maternal grandparents, Ruth and Paul Patterson.
Friends are welcome to come and share memories and stories during Matt’s Celebration of Life on Friday, January 30, 2026 from 6-8 p.m. at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapels, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw. The family will have a memory basket out, so please come with something written or take the time that night to leave a memory of Matt for his family to read.
