Marietta Sweetheimer

Marietta Sweetheimer, 97, Pierceton, died on Sunday, July 4, 2021, after a brief stay at Parkview Whitley. Marietta was born on April 18, 1924, to Frank and Lillian Sleighter in Warsaw, Indiana. Her formative years were spent in Indiana and Michigan, and she graduated from Pierceton High School in May 1942.  Following high school, she worked in Columbia City at Blue Bell and in Fort Wayne at Tokheim. She met Charles Sweetheimer of Warsaw, New York in a chance encounter while waiting on a bus in Fort Wayne in 1945. He was in the US Air Force at the time.  They were united in marriage on March 8, 1946, the 55th wedding anniversary of her maternal grandparents. They welcomed their first child, Cynthia (Petersen), in 1947. The Sweetheimer family welcomed a boy, Bruce in 1950 and another girl, Beth (Krull) in 1952. Marietta enjoyed her family, basketball, bingo, and hunting and eating morels. She is survived by her son Bruce Sweetheimer and his wife, Valerie of Pierceton and her daughter, Beth Krull and her husband, Hubert of Milford. Other loved ones include grandchildren Cari Sweetheimer of Columbia City; Wendy Bishop, Larwill; Shawn and Lissa Krull, Milford; Emily and Jason Bales of Larwill; Megan and Scott Sibert, Warsaw; Shad and Sara Krull, Milford; and Shanna and Chris Shepherd of Remington. Marietta is also survived by thirteen great grandchildren who live locally and several nieces and nephews in New York. Marietta was assisted at home by a special group of caregivers, Mimi’s Dream Team; Michelle Pugh, Jena Kammerer, Sharon Graham, and Kristina Rhodes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie; her parents; her daughter, Cynthia; and grandson, Shane Krull. She was also proceeded in death by several cherished in-laws and cousins. Family and friends may visit on Saturday, July 17th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel in Pierceton, 105 First St, Pierceton. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Bud Winstead officiating. Masks are optional, and social distancing is encouraged. No food is permitted at this time.
