Leon Burnett was born on July 15, 1951, in Proctor, Arkansas, to Alex and Willie Mae Burnett (née Moore). The fifth of fifteen children, Leon grew up surrounded by the love and energy of a large family. He attended Central High School in South Bend, Indiana, before proudly serving his country, two years in the Navy and two years in the Army, where he worked as a cook. After his military service, he eventually made Indiana his home, settling in Warsaw, where he lived for many years.
Leon was a devoted family man known for his wonderful sense of humor, warm spirit, and unwavering love for those around him. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, and bringing joy to others through laughter. His faith was an important part of his life, and he regularly attended services at Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a dedicated member under the leadership of Pastor Clif Burritt.
Leon was married twice. From his first marriage, he was blessed with three children: Tirus Burnett, Lyonte Taran Burnett (Trinette), and Lyonte Tyrell Burnett (Lawana), along with stepchildren Lwanda (Tang) Lee and Rayvon Lee. On December 24, 2009, he married his beloved wife, Brenda Joyce Childress. Leon and Brenda, who first met in 2003, shared many cherished years together. Although they had no children together, Leon lovingly embraced Brenda’s children as his own: Sharron Steward (James), Cherrice Payne (Jacque), Tarharka Payton, and Maya Payton.
During his final days, Leon was surrounded by family who cared for him deeply. On April 5, 2026 (Easter Sunday) at 9:42 p.m., he peacefully made his eternal transition and went home to be with the Lord.
Leon leaves behind a large and loving family, including 35 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews who brought him immense pride and joy.
He is also survived by his sisters Louise Diggins, Brenda Adams, and Josephine Burnett, and by his brother Robert Burnett. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and five brothers.
Leon Burnett will be remembered for his humor, his upbeat spirit, and the deep love he poured into his family and friends. His legacy of kindness, laughter, and devotion will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
A visitation for Leon will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 10-11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church of Oswego, 3065 E Armstrong Road, Leesburg, Indiana 46538.
