Gerald Edson Showalter, 85 of Warsaw, Indiana passed away at 8:20 am Monday, February 3, 2014 in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw. On March 21, 1928, he was born in Middlebury, Indiana to Noble L. and Edna May (Kauffman) Showalter. He was united in marriage to Lois Maxine Cary on June 26, 1948 in Goshen, Indiana. Gerald graduated from high school in Millersburg, Indiana, class of 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 1955. During his service in the military, he was on the Timber Bridge Committee and was an instructor on how to build and tear down bridges. Gerald worked for Indiana Farm Bureau Hatchery, Goshen as a general hatcheryman and fieldman. He then worked for Cobb Inc., as a hatchery manager with responsibility in feed mill and purchasing. In 1958, he transferred to Gainesville, Georgia to open up a hatchery. He became area manager in 1964 for production and sales for the southeast area. During this time, he was active with the Georgia Poultry Federation. In May of 1966, he joined Arbor Acres Farm, Inc., in Thorntown, where he was general manager and was responsible for sixty employees and supervised two leghorn salesmen for the same area. In November of 1972, he joined Creighton Brothers, Warsaw, where he was in charge of egg processing which included managing Crystal Lake Egg Processing and Creightons Egg Packing Operation. In 1994, he retired from Creighton Brothers, Inc. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as a Past Deacon and Elder and he also was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife of sixty five years, Lois M. Showalter, Warsaw; two children, Rodney (and spouse Cynthia) Showalter, Indianapolis and Anne Showalter, Warsaw; one granddaughter, Casey Showalter, Indianapolis; two sisters, Charlene Christophel, Goshen and Esther Deal, Goshen and two brothers, Glen (and spouse Rose Ann) Showalter, Goshen and Dale (and spouse Janet) Showalter, Goshen. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vesta Stroman and two brothers, Stahly Showalter and Jay Showalter, who was killed on April 15, 1945 during World War II. He was also preceded in death by three brother-in-laws, Theron Christophel, Tom Deal and Albert Stroman. Services will be at a later date. There are no visitation hours planned. Memorial contributions are to be made to the Alzheimers Association, Indiana Chapter, 50 East 91st Street, Suite #100, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
