Elmer Howard, 90 of Claypool, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 4:32 pm in Mason Health and Rehabilitation Center, Warsaw, Indiana. On February 22, 1921, Elmer was born to Green and Rose (Minnix) Howard in Salyersville, Kentucky. He married Lorene Renee Howard in August of 1939. She preceded him in death in June of 1990. Elmer then married Lena Deaton in December of 1992. She is surviving. A longtime resident of Claypool, Indiana, he graduated from Claypool High School in 1939. Elmer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then worked on the railroad as a maintainers helper, retiring after 42 years of service. Elmer was a member of the American Legion Post #49, Warsaw and Claypool Lions Club. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Claypool Fire Department and attended Claypool United Methodist Church. He is survived his wife, Lena Howard, Claypool; 2 children, Penny (and spouse Gary) Myers, Bloomington and Linda (and spouse Bill) Miller, Warsaw; 3 step children, John (and spouse Janet) Deaton, Claypool, Jerry (and spouse JoEllen) Deaton, Warsaw and Jane Stoops, Warsaw. 1 brother, Mac Howard, Wheatfield; 2 step sisters, Celia (and spouse Bill) Hershman, Wheatfield and Mary Arnett, Wheatfield; 1 step brother, Roscoe Jackson, Wheatfield. 6 grandchildren, Kate Myers, Bloomington; Rachel Myers, Bloomington; Sheri (and spouse Jack) Bryant, Warsaw; Tonya (and spouse Dave) Warner, South Whitley; Nichole Swain, Warsaw and Michelle Hobbs, Warsaw. 4 step grandchildren, Jason Stoops, Warsaw; Jarrod Deaton, Warsaw; Jacob (and spouse Katie) Deaton, Warsaw and Angie (and spouse Eric) Jungbauer, Indianapolis. 13 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Elmer was also preceded in death by a daughter, sister, brother and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 11:00 am with Pastor Evelyn Haney officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake with military honors by the American Legion Post #49 and VFW Post #1126, Warsaw. Visitation hours are 3:00 - 7:00 pm Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the funeral chapel. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Claypool Lions Club.
