Elizabeth (Betty) Leslie Kaye-Smith, of Warsaw, Indiana passed away at 10:20 PM on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Millers Merry Manor, Warsaw, Indiana. On August 29, 1918 she was born in Chicago, Illinois to George E. and Rachael DeHaven Leslie and lived in Wilmette, Illinois and later the Chicago area. Betty married Elliott Kaye-Smith in Chicago on October 1, 1945. She has lived in Winona Lake since 1946. Betty was a graduate of Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois and Moody Bible Institute, Chicago. She earned two master’s degrees, one from Miami University of Ohio (Aerospace Education) and one from Manchester College. She studied at several other universities in Mexico City, Madrid, Spain, Ball State and Colorado. While living in Illinois she was an editor with Scripture Press and later a teacher of Spanish, English, History, and Geography at Pierceton and Whitko High Schools for 28 years. She and her husband were active in politics, the Civil Air Patrol, and were world travelers, traveling extensively in Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, and North, Central, and South America. Both she and her husband were pilots and owned their own single engine airplane. Betty was one of the first women in Kosciusko County to have a pilot’s license and was a member of the Ninety-nines (an international organization of women pilots) She flew solo in a “Powder Puff Derby” from coast to coast. She was a member of the Church of The Good Shepherd, Winona Lake; Kosciusko County Retired Teachers, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Kosciusko Community Hospital Auxiliary, Winona Lake Planning Commission, Ninety-Nines (International Organization of Women Pilots), Delta Kappa Gamma, and Society of Women Educators. She is survived by a cousin Patricia McElroy Dunbar of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and her sons, David W. Dunbar of Greenwood, Indiana, Timothy D. Dunbar of Woodbury, Minnesota and Stephen W. Dunbar of Pittsburgh. She is preceded by her husband, Elliott Kaye-Smith. Graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw on Friday, October 5, 2012 at 10:30 AM with Pastor Rob Harrison officiating. There will be no viewing.Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
