Conroe, Texas – Barbara Doty (Shelton) Purrington, passed away at 3:00am, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2017. She passed peacefully in the loving care of the staff at Conroe Health Care Center, Conroe, TX, where she has been a resident for 3 years. She was 88. She was born in Warsaw, Indiana, on March 6, 1929, to Russell and Elizabeth (Oborn) Doty. Three sisters have preceded her in death. She was raised primarily in Pendleton, Indiana, in the red brick house on “The Popcorn Farm.” Her father sold popcorn under the brand name of “Big Noisy,.” Barbara married her high school sweetheart, James A. Shelton, on June 12, 1949, in Pendleton, Indiana. The couple enjoyed four children: Jeffrey J. Shelton, Thomas D. Shelton (1953-1988), Cynthia B. (Shelton) Walsh, and Jennifer L. Shelton (1956-1974). The family moved to Warsaw, Indiana, in 1967. The couple was married for 25 years, until his death in June of 1977. She married Edwin S. Purrington, on December 27, 1981, in Warsaw, Indiana. The couple enjoyed his three sons: Edwin S. Purrington, Jr., James P. Purrington, and Franklin L. Purrington, III. They were married for 31 years, until his death in November, 2012. Barbara graduated from Pendleton High School, Pendleton, Indiana, in 1947. She attended Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. She retired in 1992 from Dalton Foundries as an Executive Secretary. She was initiated into Kappa, Kappa, Kappa, on June 5, 1947, by Gamma Pi, Chapter in Pendleton, Indiana. She was installed on August 26, 1967, as a Warsaw Associate, Warsaw, Indiana. She was a woman of many talents: pianist, professional style dressmaker, reweaver of fabric, crafter, poet, to name a few. She was a very creative soul. She is survived by: Mr.-Mrs. Jeffrey J. (Cindy) Shelton, Warsaw, IN, Mrs.-Mr. Cynthia B. (Terrence) Walsh, Conroe, TX, Mr.-Mrs. Edwin S. (Shirley) Purrington, Fort Worth, TX, Mr.-Mrs. James P. (Sandra) Purrington, Whitmore Lake, MI, and Mr. Franklin L. Purrington, Dearborn Heights, MI, along with 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She has many family members and friends whom she loved and loved her. A “Memorial Gathering” is being planned for the spring of 2018. The memorial date, location, and time will be announced at a later date. McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw is entrusted with arrangements.
