February 26, 1924 — March 17, 2016

Joan Marceille Wiegand, 92, of Banning Lake, passed away at 6:25 pm on St. Patrick’s Day at the home she shared with her daughter, Janet Miller. Joan was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Kerlin and Hazel (Cook) Cary on February 26, 1924. She grew up in Marion, Indiana where she met and married George Paul Wiegand on May 24, 1941.   George preceded her in death in 1989. Joan attended Marion High School and received her GED from Wawasee High School in 1977. She retired from J.B. Mishler, M.D.’s practice in Pierceton, after working as his receptionist and medical assistant for nearly 25 years. Joan then worked at the Bowen Center Warsaw as the Assistant Coordinator of Volunteer Services, followed by the Kosciusko County Mental Health Association as their secretary. Joan moved to Bloomington in May, 2000, to live with her daughter Pat and her family.   While in Bloomington, Joan attended St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. In December, 2007, she returned home to Northern Indiana where she lived with her daughter Mary until February, 2009.   Joan then lived with her daughter Janet, at Banning Lake, until her death. Joan is survived by 6 children: Rose Marie (Steve) Gesaman, George Paul (Kathy) Wiegand, Jr., Janet Ann (Joseph) Miller, all of the Barbee Lakes; Patricia Louise (David) Barber, Bloomington, Mary Leonore (James) Horn, Winona Lake and Theresa Marie (Steve) Swihart, Bloomington; 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her 3 sisters, Dorothea (Dee) Rittenhouse, Virginia (Ginny) Mercer, and Betty Cary, all of Marion; a daughter, Mary Veronica Wiegand; and a grandson, Zachary (Zac) Barber of Bloomington. She was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #253 in North Webster and also attended St. Martin dePorres Catholic Church in Syracuse. Joan will be remembered by the many patients seen at Dr. Mishler’s office, as well as the many years she was the organist at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Pierceton. Joan was a wonderful soul and a loving wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend. Her faith in God was the most important part of her life. She survived the Great Depression, had a love of all people and was extremely generous to anyone in need. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, March 22, 2016 in St. Martin dePorres Catholic Church, Syracuse with Father Richard Hire officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation hours will be from 4:00 – 8:00 pm Monday, March 21, 2016 in McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw.  A rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm Monday at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to  Kosciusko Home Care & Hospice, P.O. Box 1196, Warsaw, Indiana 46581-1196 or Backstreet Missions, P.O. Box 3297, Bloomington, Indiana 47402.
